The recently reported hit-and-run case at Ganpati Chowk in Dwarka in which one person was killed and another injured has once again brought to notice the rampant traffic signal violations and speeding prevalent in the area.
A quick survey of the area highlighted major chowks and spots where speeding and jumping of red light have become a routine affair. Many of these spots have been witness to fatal accidents over the past.
One such spot is the traffic signal adjoining Crescent Apartments in Sector 18, which is also the intersection of Sectors 17, 18, 12 and 13. The residents of the apartment complained that they have seen many accidents and collision of vehicles over the past years.
After the recent case, the residents had invited traffic inspector of the area, Rajender Singh, to their society to make him aware of the situation.
“Some time back there was an accident in which a rickshaw puller had died after being hit by a fast moving vehicle. Such cases are more prevalent at night,” said Madhu Dagar, a resident. “One or two accidents per week have become a common affair here.”
Reacting to the situation, Singh said that he would consult with the experts in his department about it and also sought suggestions from the residents.
Other areas that have also witnessed such cases include Kargil Chowk, Sector 3 crossing, Ashirvad Chowk, KM Chowk, Ganpati Chowk , T-point at Sector 17, intersection at Sectors 13/14, 10/19, 19/20, 21/22 and 22/23.
Sunil Kumar a resident of Om Apartments in Sector 14 said, “The intersection at Sectors 13/14 has seen many accidents over the past five years, some of which have been fatal. The police needs to take this matter seriously.”
Meanwhile, the residents want the police to take stern action against offenders to avoid such cases in future. Sarita Gupta, a resident of Sector 12, said, “Both traffic police as well as local police need to take strict action against traffic rules’ offenders, then only our roads will become safe.”
