Dwarka’s Mount Carmel School derecognised; mixed reactions from parents

The Delhi government has derecognised Mount Carmel School in Dwarka for increasing tuition fee without the approval from the department of education. Following this, there have been mixed reactions among the students and parents.

Tanya (name changed), a student of class V, informed her parents that some of the schools have been asked to refund the increased amount of fee with interest. She got this information from a group of friends.

On the other hand, Rajeev (name changed), a student of class IX, expressed his concerns regarding the admission into other schools. He is already in class IX and will enter into class X after April.

Rajeev said, “I am thinking which school I will get into after cancellation of recognition. I have to write X class examination next year. There will not be any value of my certificate if I write examination from this school.”

Meanwhile, the school was closed on Friday due to the annual function which is going to be organised in the evening. However, students and parents kept visiting the school after the news of the cancellation of recognition came out in open.

The parents and teachers were reluctant to talk to the media. Few of them, however, spoke to media and gave mixed reactions on the cancellation of recognition.

Many parents said that they are confident that the school will handle the issue and get recognition from the government. However, there were many others who were panicked by the development.

A parent on the condition of anonymity said, “The decision to cancel the recognition for an increase in tuition fee without approval is good for us. This will dissuade schools to increase fee arbitrarily. I hope that the school will now return the increased amount to us.”

On the other hand, many RWAs and resident’s groups welcomed the decision of the government. They expressed that schools should be dealt with proper law in place.

President of Dwarka Forum, Rejimon CK said in his post on a WhatsApp group, “Almost all the schools have been run by people having a doubtful background. It is time to stand up against them. Please, don’t be a mute spectator. It is our duty to protect the future of our young generation.”

City Spidey had a talk with Aprajita Gautam who is President of Delhi Parents Association. She said, “It was a bold step by the government. Now, the schools will hesitate in taking decisions according to their interests. However, it will be too early to comment on the future of Mount Carmel. The school would go to court and bring stay. Then, things would settle down.”
