RESIDENT SPEAK: ‘Biomass a better option than electric heaters during winters’

We all find different ways to keep ourselves warm during winters but if you ask me, I find burning biomass a better option than switching on electric heaters to combat cold waves. Why? I will explain to you the reason. But before that, we have to understand what biomass actually means?

Biomass most often refers to an energy source; it can either be used directly via combustion to produce heat or indirectly after converting it to various forms of biofuel. When we talk about heat, fire is a natural, normal process in many ecosystems and is necessary to maintain a healthy forest environment and diversity of plant and animal life.

We, humans, have been burning biomass since our existence on earth. Sources like waste wood and dry leaves, manure, garbage and crops prove to be beneficial as they are eco-friendly. Whereas carbon dioxide emission from electric heaters is said to be nearly 70 per cent, posing a serious threat to overall surroundings.

While talking about biomass, it is also important to talk about particulate matter (PM) to understand the situation. PM 2.5 and PM 10 are said to be major air pollutants. These can circulate in the air and have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometer and 10 micrometers, respectively. The possible health problems, especially lung and heart problems that these pollutants can cause is widely known.

Besides, it is important to remember that energy from renewable sources are good for the environment whereas coal, oil and gas are reserves (stored) carbon dioxide and are non-sustainable. Burning them can prove to be hazardous for living creatures. 

Therefore, say YES to waste wood, dry leaves, crops, manure and garbage and NO to paper, cardboard, plastic, rubber, polyester and synthetic materials for a better living.
