A 47-year-old woman jumped to death from the 17th floor of ATS Advantage, a high-rise in Indirapuram, on Friday afternoon. The deceased has been identified as Kavita Bhutani, who worked as assistant general manager at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in New Delhi.

The police said that Bhutani jumped from the railing situated in the lobby area outside her flat on 17th floor and hit the porch area at the third floor. She died immediately.

The tower guard of the 24-storeyed society informed the police about the incident at around 1:25 pm. After hearing a loud scream followed by a thud, we reached the spot and saw her body lying on the floor, said one of the guards.

The police have found a wooden chair and a pair of slippers in front of the railing on the 17th floor. The deceased might have used the chair to jump, said the police. However, no suicide note has been found.

Bhutani lived in her 17th floor flat with her husband, Arvind Bhutani, who works as a manager in Mother Dairy plant in Patparganj, New Delhi.

She had taken an off from office on Friday and was also alone in her flat at the time of the incident.

Her 20-year-old son, Rahul Bhutani, is studying engineering from a college in Patiala, Punjab. Her husband was at work when the incident happened.

According to the police, Kavita was under a state of depression and was taking treatment for the past one year. She also suffered from high blood pressure.

Police said that prima facie, it appears a case of suicide and her long fight with depression could be a reason for taking the extreme step. “However, postmortem report will disclose her cause of death,” said ASP Ghaziabad, Ravi Kumar.

A team of forensic experts came on the spot. The body has been sent for postmortem.
