Will there be an end to Mayfield Garden's water woes?

Mayfield Garden, the oldest residential society of Gurgaon, is yet to be developed fully. Residents have been deprived of water supply due to the apathy of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and five private developers Sheetal International Pvt Ltd, New India City Developers Pvt Ltd, North Star Pvt Ltd, Ajay Impex Pvt Ltd and Satsubha Investment Pvt Ltd of the society.

“The residents of Mayfield Garden have been facing water crisis ever since its inception," said Dharamvir Yadav, RWA president of the society's D block and one of the oldest residents. "The reason is that there are no proper pipeline connections till date. The area falls under the jurisdiction of HUDA but officials have never taken the issue seriously. Such a situation occurs every summer, but they have not taken any concrete step to solve the crisis.”

Residents allege that they have been suffering from dismal water supply this summer as well and despite several reminders to officials, no steps have been taken to alleviate the situation. There are 20,000 people living in this society for the past 27 years and a majority of them are dependent on water tankers.

The 304-acre township situated in Sector 51 is an assortment of 10,000 flats and bungalows. Of these, 7,000 households have been using ground water through bore well to fulfil their basic needs. While the remaining 3,000, who bought flats after 2012, do not avail ground water, as its extraction had by then been banned by the Punjab and Haryana High Courts.

After losing all hope, the Mayfield Garden RWA had moved a petition in the Lokayukta court on May 30, 2011 for the under-development of the township. During the last hearing on April 16, 2016, Lokayukta had decided to inspect the society soon.
