The incident happened when the woman was returning home in a rickshaw in Sun Tower, Indirapuram.
The day when the whole city was immersed in celebrating Women’s Day, a woman resident of Indirapuram faced a rather upsetting incident.
Two miscreants splashed chilled water on a 27-year-old woman’s face while she was returning to her home in Sun Tower in Indirapuram on Friday afternoon. The duo later wished her a happy Women's Day before fleeing on their scooty.
“I was so terrified as I thought they had splashed some lethal liquid on. My face was having a burning sensation. But later it appeared to be water,” the victim said.
According to the victim, the incident happened at around 4:15 pm when she was returning home in a rickshaw from a nearby bank. “I was near Mahagun Mansion society when I heard someone saying excuse me. I ignored it the first time but when I heard it again, I turned and saw two teenagers on a white scooty following me. I thought they were asking for directions but suddenly they splashed chilled water on my face and sped away," victim added narrating her ordeal.
To many, this appears as a prank ahead of Holi but if goes unchecked, it will set a dangerous precedent, said Laxmi Srinivasan, mother of the victim.
"What if it had been acid?" questioned Srinivasan. "My daughter has had two open heart surgeries in the past and the incident has left her in a state of shock."
Though the police has filed a complaint in the matter, they are taking the incident lightly. When City Spidey asked chowki in-charge, Kuldeep Singh about the incident, he said that it was just a prank by teenagers. “Nothing serious.”
When asked how he arrived at this conclusion, he chose not to comment.
Meanwhile, High Court advocate, Prashant Kanha, opined that police should not ignore such incidents as three elements are involved in the incident. "First, misadventure against a woman. Second, voluntarily causing harm to a person where miscreants could be booked under section 323 of IPC. Third, invasion of one's privacy," he elaborated.
"If such incidents go unchecked, the miscreants get a sense of freedom that they can do anything and nothing will happen," Kanha added.
Shivani Jain, president of All Schools Parents Association, said that such incidents highlight the lack of gender education among young generation. "Celebrating Women's Day is not enough. We need to teach our children to respect women," said Shivani.
