This is the story of a girl, who despite severe financial constraints, managed to be a school topper in her XII CBSE exams.
Meet Sulekha Prasad, a student of Om Foundation School in Sector 51, Noida, who secured 90 per cent marks. Though there were several examples of students who have topped in their respective schools with over 90 percent marks, her story is particularly inspiring.
Belonging to the financially weaker section of the society, Sulekha had all odds pitted against her. Her mother, Sunita Devi, has been a cook in Prasad's school for the past fourteen years. Her father is a daily wage earner who makes his living as a painter, whitewashing houses.
Devi told City Spidey that with a paltry sum coming in each month, it was impossible for Prasad to even think of taking tuitions or private classes. What Prasad lacked in opportunity, she made up for with hard work and determination. While preparing for her board exams, Prasad was even teaching some students to earn pocket money and support her family.
Devi earns Rs 5,000 a month, while her husband gets Rs 500 a day, if he finds work. The family has to take care of rent and pay the school fees for their two sons as well. Devi does not forget to thank the school administration and the teachers, without whom her daughter could not have probably achieved this feat.
Shankar Prasad, the achiever's father, along with his family, resides in a tiny room in Morna village, Sector 35, Noida.
Rajneesh Ranjan, a school teacher, told City Spidey that Sulekha was an exemplary student.
Prasad scored 95 in Chemistry, 92 in Physics, and 91 in Mathematics. But wait. Before you think of her as just another bookworm, there's more. Apart from being a class topper, she is also an avid volleyball player who has won several medals at school-level tournaments in the past.
