I'puram: UPPCB issues notice to Saya Zenith for flouting pollution norms

Sighting violation of pollution norms in the installation of diesel generators at Saya Zenith Apartments, a high rise in Indirapuram, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) issued a notice to the builder on Tuesday.

The notice was issued after an inspection was done by officials of the pollution control board. The officials had received multiple complaints on twitter from the residents of the society, following which the inspection was done.

AOA members and some residents had complained to the board that chimneys of the DG open just above the machines instead of going till the top of the building, maintaining a height of five metres above the terrace level, as mentioned in the UP Apartment Act, 2010.

UPPCB has directed the builder to extend the height of chimneys in compliance to Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1987, on immediate basis. “Otherwise, action will be taken against the society (Saya Zenith) without serving any prior notice and the responsibility of the repercussions shall lie upon you (builder) only,” the notice read.

A member of AOA of Saya said that the hazardous smoke coming out of the DG is affecting the health of the residents and further risking their respiratory system in an already heavily polluted city. “Worst affected are the residents living below the fifth floor,” he added.

The residents also complained that for the past five years, they have been forced to inhale poisonous gases emanating from DG. “After the builder refused to listen to us, we had approached the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) many times,” said the member.

However, years after waiting, GDA did act, but just a few days prior to the general elections. “After our complaints, GDA tightened the noose around the builder a week before the election date. The authority asked the builder to extend the smoke vent up to the terrace. The builder also apprised it but the work is very slow. Only some stuff has been bought till date," he claimed.
