Currently, the high-security registration number plates bearing a unique identification number are only being installed in new vehicles purchased April 1 onwards.
As the process of issuing high-security registration number plates for newly purchased vehicles kicked off in the city this month, the residents of Noida are demanding that the same facility be given for their vehicles also.
NP Singh, president of Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Association, on Friday wrote to commissioner of transport, Meerut, demanding equal facility for old vehicles as well.
The high-security registration number plates bear a unique identification number and a hologram along with vehicle registration number and bar-code. These number plates cannot be tempered with or removed as each has a special lock system in place. These will also help the police to get details of car owner quickly.
The new number plates will help the police in handling cases of vehicle theft.
Currently, the facility is restricted to vehicles purchased April 1, 2019 onwards. Government is considering to issue such temper-proof number plates for old vehicles as well. But that will take time at least two years.
In his letter, Singh said that thousands of Noida residents daily travel to Delhi. Giving them an opportunity to replace their old number plates with high-security registration number plates will greatly benefit them. It will also help the government raise revenue, he said.
