Soon, group housing societies across Ghaziabad to have two drainage pipes

Following the launch of Jal Shakti Abhiyan by the Central Government, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is planning to issue an order for group housing projects to install one more pipe in their drainage infrastructure.

Till now, the drainage system functions with a single pipe. Now, the builders have to install two pipes- for kitchen and bathroom, toilet sludge, separately. While the water of the kitchen and bathroom can be reused in parks and other places of the society, the dirty water containing toilet sludge will go directly into the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

However, this order will only be compelled on the housing projects whose maps are yet to be sanctioned by the authority. "It is quite tough to levy it on old housing projects where drainage system on a single pipe is already in function," said Kanchan Verma, vice chairperson of the authority.

Verma said that this new system would lead to water conservation as the chores used to be done with groundwater like maintenance of horticulture can be replaced with treated water

"In group housing societies, maintenance of parks and housekeeping exhaust large volumes of groundwater. Many societies also do not have functional rainwater harvesting system, this adds to the problem of depletion of groundwater level, which is why, we are planning to implement this system so that water can be reused for different chores and groundwater is conserved," Verma added.

This plan will be proposed in the upcoming board meeting of GDA.
