For Dwarka, bicycle becomes symbol of World Environment Day

Along the 11.7 km route of cycle rally, cyclists left a message for the community to save the environment.

For Dwarka, bicycle becomes symbol of World Environment Day Cyclists at the starting point of the rally awaiting its flagging off by local councillor.

Entire community of Sector 13/14 of Dwarka, including children, participated in a cycle rally on Sunday. Organised by Greenlco Eco Foundation, an NGO, to mark World Environment Day, the event was named Greenothon after its sponsors.

The moment the rally was flagged off by area councillor, Shashi Tomar, from the chowk of Sector 13/14, cyclists in large number set off pedalling their way to the last point in Sector 11 and back to finishing line from where they had started. In the process, they covered a distance of around 11.7 km through sectors like 17, 18, 19, 10, 6 and 5.

All along the way, the cyclists left a message for the community to save the environment. The expedition started at around 7 am. The main cycling event was divided into two categories – junior and senior. For juniors, the distance was 2.5 km.

Apart from the cycling event, various awareness programmes on the importance of environment and its protection were organised on the occasion.  Traffic Police also gave a presentation on traffic safety while Delhi Metro sponsored the event by giving bicycles.

All the participants were given a plant sapling each and administered an oath to look after it properly. The saplings were provided by Delhi Park and Garden Society, NCT of Delhi. The visitors wrote messages on importance of environment and took a pledge to use bicycles for commutation within the sub city to the extent possible.
