Gurugram: 163 illegal borewells sealed in enforcement drive

To check the illegal groundwater extraction, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Friday initiated the enforcement drive against illegal borewells and sealed as many as 163 borewells in the district.

The drive is a part of the Jalshakti Abhiyan that is being carried out under the supervision of district administration.

The team led by DCP Headquarters Shashank Sawan; Additional Municipal Commissioner, YS Gupta; Joint Director, Hariom Atri conducted the raid in their respective zones and sealed active illegal borewells.

During the enforcement drive, the teams sealed 163 borewells that are extracting groundwater and selling it commercially, used in car washing station and service station at various localities. The MCG officials dismantle illegal borewells and seize equipment to prevent them from reopening the borewells.

On Wednesday, MCG Commissioner, Amit Khatri had a meeting with all the executive engineers wherein he constituted 24 teams for eight divisions and directed the teams to seal illegal borewells operations which are extracting groundwater.

During the sealing drive, the team faced mild opposition from the locals in Jal Vihar, Kanhaiya and Sarai Alawardi area, but due to the presence of the police, the drive was conducted peacefully. The case was also registered in Sector-50 police station against those who opposed the action.
