A tweet of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday early morning gave a cheering moment to power consumers. He informed through the tweet that the government has decided not to increase power tariff.

“Congratulations Delhi. For fifth consecutive year NO electricity tariff hike. On the contrary, for the fifth consecutive yr, tariffs reduced. Delhi has lowest electricity tariffs in the country now (sic),” Chief Minister's tweet read.

The announcement came after the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) issued a notification claiming a reduction in the new tariff order for the current financial year 2019-2020

As per the notification of DERC, the fixed charges for households consuming up to 15 kw of units of power has been reduced drastically.

According to the new tariff order, the fixed charge for households consuming till 15 kilowatts of units of power has been reduced as per the following slabs: for consumption up to 2 kw, from Rs 125 to Rs 20; for 2-5 kw, from Rs 140 to 50; and from 5-15 kw, for Rs 175 to Rs 100.

Fixed charge is the part of the electricity bill which consumer has to pay even if one does not consume single unit of power.

A proposal to increase fixed charges in last year had prompted the residents of the national capital to voice against the proposal. Many Residents Welfare Associations (RWA), a representative body of residential colonies, had raised their objection with the DERC and the Delhi government.

Hours after Chief Minister's tweet, power minister of Delhi Satyendra Jain is likely to elaborate on it more in a press meeting in the evening.
