NHAI to monitor 'Fast & Furious' riders on Delhi-Meerut Expressway

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will equip Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) with CCTV cameras to keep a tab on the vehicles plying on it. The authority has planned to install more than 100 CCTV cameras for this task, officials told. Apart from these 100 cameras, the authority will install four highly advanced cameras to check the pace of the vehicles. These cameras will be set up separately and will help the officials to check the speed and zoom in the registration number plate of the vehicles. The monitoring room for it will be set up at Lal Kuan, Ghaziabad.

This measure is taken to make commuting on the expressway safer. The whole stretch of the Expressway is slated to be open for the public by mid 2020.

Officials at NHAI told that each CCTV camera will be placed at a distance of 2 km. There will be four toll plazas on the expressway which will have more cameras. Officials also informed that to measure the speed of the vehicles, four highly-advanced cameras would be installed. These cameras would be set up at Pratap Vihar Gangajal Plant Cut, Bamheta, junction at Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Partappur in Ghaziabad.

Meanwhile speaking on the speed limit, the officials said the speed limit would be set at 100kmph on the expressway. This move has come after a recent survey done by NHAI to check the speed of vehicles plying on few stretches of the expressway.

During the survey which took place few days ago, officials from NHAI found at least 800 vehicles, mostly cars and SUVs, running at a speed of 140 kilometres per hour (kmph) or above, all in a three-hour span.

The permissible speed limit at expressways in the country is 120 kmph while on national highways, the maximum speed limit for cars is 100 kmph in rural areas and 70 kmph in urban areas.
