Just a touch, and a gloomy day already starts looking better? That's the world of reiki for you. And Gurgaon resident Neena Khanna swears by it.

Khanna, an NRI, uses reiki, a form of spiritual healing, to treat hypertension, blood pressure, diabetes, skin ailments and depression, among other ailments, at her centre Alchemy Healers.

More than 15 women of Uniworld Garden on Sohna Road, where Khanna stays when she is in Gurgaon, are attending the morning sessions at her centre. “Reiki is a Japanese technique that is effective in combating stress and inducing relaxation and healing. It is simple, natural and safe. Reiki is administered through the hands, which is based on the idea that an unseen life force flows through all of us,” Khanna says.

Kamlesh Jain, who has also been attending the healing sessions for more than two months, says, “I have felt my body go through several changes after I joined the programme. To me, it is a natural means of self-improvement. It also helps with the side-effects one may be experiencing from the use of various medicines. I feel a lot more relaxed these days.”

Taking reiki sessions in Australia and Africa, Khanna's techniques have a global following as well. Interestingly, however, her path in the world of spiritual healing began here in India, more specifically in Bhopal. She says, “I learnt therapy in Bhopal 15 years ago, and since then, I have helped a lot of people across the world. My family is settled in Australia and I keep visiting India for healing sessions.”

As she treats both Indians and Australians, she observes, “Since people's lifestyles differ in both the countries, their ailments too are different. Here I see people complaining mainly about blood pressure, diabetes and skin problems, but in Australia I see higher stress levels.”

In a world where we pop medicines at the drop of a hat, it's true that Khanna's healing technique comes as a worthwhile alternative.
