Dwarka: Residents want separate play areas for children

It is no secret that the lack of play areas has compelled children to play in the parks. In fact, children from all age groups use parks to play games such as cricket, football and other games. Senior citizens often dislike the activity of games being played in the parks. Sometimes, they complain to police against these activities.

Recently in Sector 5, few boys were forcefully stopped from playing in the park with the help of police. Boys said that they went to play as the particular park was big and they were playing outside the main area of the park.

Such things often happen in the parks. While the senior citizens are adamant on restricting children to play in park areas, children said that there must be a play areas for them.

RK Singh, a senior citizen of Sector 22 said, “Once I got hurt with a cricket ball while I was on a walk here. We asked the children not to play but they didn't stop. Now, with the interference of DDA such things are under control but on weekends we face problem.”

Vishal Gupta, from Lovely Home Apartments in Sector 5 said, “Why to stop children from playing? This is our fault that we could not give them open space to play. Stopping them forcefully is not justified. I personally feel that we should let them play.”

This has become a topic of discussion in Dwarka and once the DDA had planned to develop some play areas in Dwarka.

According to the sources, there was a plan to develop at least one play area in each sector. A social organisation ANHLGT (Association of Neighbourhood Ladies Get-together) followed up the subject with DDA and two big parks, one in Sector 22 and other in Sector 23, were developed as exclusive play area for the children in 2012.

President of the association, Cicily Kodiyan said that DDA had to develop five such play areas that time. “They developed two and marked some parks to develop more. One in Sector 12, one in Sector 11, and one in Sector 5,” he said.

There are hundreds of parks in Dwarka where children play. Sports lovers and the youths in the area expressed that DDA and SDMC must designate those parks as play areas for outdoor games.

Sarvesh Kumar, a resident of Gauri Ganesh Apartments in Sector 3 said, “DDA must think upon the concept of play areas in the city. There are many parks which can be converted into play ground. Though they have a concept to promote sports in the community, yet they must think in this direction seriously.”
