Acting as good samaritans, few residents of Saya Zion, a residential society in Greater Noida, have been organizing a monthly 'Bhandara' from the last two months for needy people.

It is organised on a monthly basis at the main gate of the society. The initiative was inspired by a group of women who used to provide 'Roohafza' to the guards. Taking inspiration from them, other members of the society and the women group  decided to hold monthly 'Bhandara.'

The core organising team includes Swati Mathur, Aayushi, Samikhsa, Anshu, Shruti and Reena Kalra from Saya Zion.

Swati Mathur, a resident of Saya Zion said, “We organise the Bhandara after enough amount is collected among the residents. There is no compulsion for donation. A resident may share whatever amount he wishes to donate through an online payment.”

In our first attempt, we had spend Rs 15,000 and had arranged food for the 'Bhandara'. “This month, we had ordered 140 kg cooked rice and 180 kg of kadhi,” she added.

The resident further said, “We usually plan to set up the Bhandara on the first Sunday of every month and mostly everything gets finished in two hours.”

On being asked about what initiative have they taken to curb garbage scattering after the event, Swati said that they placed dustbins around the tent.

“We also ask people to form the line using society's space so that no inconvenience is caused to the commuters on the main road,” she added.

Swati said that the residents and cleaning staff clean the area after the event.
