Are e-rickshaws a nuisance on the road?

It seems they are as Noida residents complain of traffic snarls, untrained drivers and no designated stops.

Are e-rickshaws a nuisance on the road?

E-rickshaws, introduced as an eco-friendly alternative to auto-rickshaws, seems to have become a traffic nuisance in Noida. According to some commuters, there are too many of them and have untrained drivers, which adds to traffic problems instead of being a solution.

The biggest problem e-rickshaws cause is that of traffic jams on the main roads of the city. They stop anywhere to pick up or drop passengers. This happens because e-rickshaws do not have any designated stops, have untrained hands behind the wheel and there are not enough traffic policemen to discipline them. The result is more traffic woes for commuters.

Rahul Kumar, a daily commuter, told City Spidey that e-rickshaw drivers have a tendency to apply brakes suddenly, which increases the chances of a mishap.

Anurag Nigam, another commuter, said, “Even e-rickshaws which don’t have headlights or whose headlights do not work ply freely on the roads after sunset. Some drivers are so reckless that they drive their vehicles on the wrong side of the road. I hope the traffic police swings into action and educates them about road safety.”

When City Spidey took up the matter with Prabal Pratap Singh, SP traffic, he said, “The traffic police will soon earmark places and ask the Noida Authority to make permanent stoppages and stands for them.”

At present, there are about 1000 e-rickshaws plying on the roads of Noida. The Noida traffic police had some time ago chalked out ten different routes for e-rickshaws and said that these vehicles will be run on the designated routes. But with the passage of time, the plan seems to have been forgotten and residents continue to suffer in absence of a policy to rein in indisciplined drivers.
