Noida: Mahagun Moderne adopts cloth bags to replace plastic ones

The apartment owners’ association (AOA) of Mahagun Moderne, a residential society in Noida's sector 78, is doing its bit to minimise the usage of plastic considered harmful for the environment.

Recently, the AOA took an initiative called Bartan Bank, a bank of stainless-steel crockery, for the purpose of community parties or events.

And now, they have come up with another eco-friendly initiative, 'Pick Your Bag'. Under the initiative, the residents will be using cloth bags instead of plastic ones.

According to Sandeep Chauhan, president of the AoA, the society received its first batch of 500 cloth bags on Tuesday out of the ordered 3,000 bags which were distributed among the residents from the Mandir area of the society.

Mridul Bhatia, secretary of the AoA, told CitySpidey that the bags would be used in a cycle in which any resident or delivery boy can pick a bag from the gate or lobby guard and use it. They can return it to the guards later. The bags will also be available at entry gates no, 2, 3, 4, 5 and mart.

The secretary said, "The approximate cost per bag is between Rs 16 and 18 and the AoA will keep adding bags on a monthly basis. Our target is to supply 5,000 bags and even if 250-300 bags are lost we will replace them with new ones.”

The AoA has also taken the responsibility to wash the bags every month or whenever needed.

Bhatia said that the inspiration for Bartan bank and Pick Your Bag was derived from a seminar on bulk waste management organised by CEO Noida Authority in August this year.

He said soon after the seminar, the AoA decided to curb the menace of plastic in the society and hence came up with these initiatives.
