Noida: Big plastic haul in raid on a gift shop

As part of the ongoing anti-plastic inspection drive officials of the Noida Authority carried out a raid on a shop, Gift Bazaar, at JS Arcade in Noida's Sector 18 on Thursday and seized a large quantity of single-use plastic.

A penalty of Rs 25,000 has also been levied by the sanitary inspector of public health-1 from the owner of the shop for using plastic polythene.

The inspection team from the authority has been going round the city imposing heavy penalties on commercial entities using plastic in violation of the rules laid by the authority. On Wednesday, the team also seized single-use plastic from Maayas Sweets in Sector 50 and godown of Gem International.

When CitySpidey inquired about the raid, an irate staff member of the Gift Bazaar asked, "Why are only small shops like ours being targeted? Why no one is questioning high-end branded shops which are using plastic openly?”

“Go and visit Bikanerwala, they are also using plastic containers and plastic sealing, but nobody questions them. Even roadside vendors and hawkers are using plastic bags, nobody will go and fine them. They encroach roads, break rules but no one questions," he bemoaned.

When asked if Gift Bazaar would look for replacement for polythene, the staff member said, “We will not give bags now, the customer can get his own.”
