On day two, protest against dumping site reaches SDMC LoH’s doors

A day after intense protest against garbage dumping at a vacant land in Dwarka and the consequent faceoff with culprits, residents were determined to take the issue to its logical conclusion. Hence, they upped the ante holding their demonstration on Sunday, this time right in front of the residence of Leader of House in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Kamaljeet Sehrawat.

The residents are agitated over the unabated dumping of garbage at the vacant land opposite Golf Link Residency and Samridhi Apartments in Sector 18. They have been complaining that the filth lying at the spot is a potential health hazard.

To take their protest to another level so that they could grab immediate attention of the authorities, about 150-200 people, including senior citizens and children, marched on foot from the dumping site to the society where Leader of House, SDMC resides.

Along the way, the protestors raised slogans against the gross mismanagement of garbage by the SDMC. They were holding aloft placards showing lackadaisical approach of the SDMC in handling the situation arising from the sanitary mess in the city.

The protesting residents eventually met Kamaljeet Sehrawat and demanded her intervention into the matter. They convinced her about their grievances and asked her to take immediate steps to ensure that garbage dumping is stopped at the site.

They said, “Things are going bad to worse. The filth at the site of illegal garbage dumping has started affecting the health of people living in the vicinity. There is a provisional dhalao (garbage dump) on the spot which needs to be shifted. Because of the dhalao, entire green area has become a garbage dump.”

The protesters informed that they have sounded a warning while speaking to Sehrawat that they would continue to protest against the dumping until the problem is solved.

On Saturday, protesters had stayed put at the site keeping a vigil sitting on chairs. The residents requested the people, with folded hands, against dumping at the spot as it would lead to destruction of green belt. They tried to convince them about the seriousness of the matter.

Many senior residents are said to have written to concerned departments and public representative of the SDMC, local MLA, the Environment Minister of NCT of Delhi apprising about the situation.
