RESIDENT SPEAK: Jal Vayu Vihar sees red in transmission tower installed in park

Residents of E block of Jal Vayu Vihar, Sector 21, are in a complete shock over transmission tower being installed in a park. They say no one has informed them about the tower.

Jal Vayu Vihar is the first housing project of Air Force-Naval Housing Board. Not only Indian Air Force (IAF) and Indian Navy (IN) personnel but also civilians live in the colony. Many of the civilians who live in the colony have purchased flats from defence personnel.

The colony is run by elected as representatives of the residents of Sector 21 and Sector 25. The two sectors are divided into blocks.

The park in the E block, where the tower is coming up, is small and surrounded by residential flats.

The residents are concerned about the potential health risks from the tower. Transmission towers emit radiation which can prove hazardous for the lives of the residents.

We are not only concerned about our own health, but also worried about the future of our children.

What intrigued us the most was that no one, not even the company that has installed the tower thought it fit to inform us about it. We knew about it just two days ago.

The residents are supposed to be taken into confidence before taking any decision which directly or indirectly affects our lives. But the norm has been conveniently ignored in the case.

Today, when we convened a meeting of senior citizens in the morning, we found fear and anxiety writ large on every face. Women were especially worried for young children as they happen to be more immune to radiation and hence are vulnerable to its impact.

Therefore, I would like to request the society and the company to take pity on the residents and look for some alternative site for transmission tower.
