A gift for Delhiites: Dial 112, access all emergency services

Taking a cue from other countries, the Delhi Police has decided to launch a single emergency number '112' on Wednesday. The overarching helpline number will provide immediate access to all the services of police (100), fire (101), health (108), women's safety (1090) and child protection.

The new service is expected to improve the Delhi Police control room, which, so far, has been using archaic technology for the past 50 years costing it around 25 crore. Equipped with latest technology, the new initiative will turn the control room into a a veritable call centre.

Briefing about the new technology, a senior police officer said that whether somebody dials '100', '101' or '102', the call will automatically connect to '112'.

Unlike the contemporary system in which calls made to '100' or '101' are recorded at the police control room located at the police headquarters, now, the new system makes its possible to connect a call to the police post instantly. All the police vehicles will be equipped with phones to receive the message immediately.

Although the new emergency helpline number '112' has been put to service from today, the old number '100' will also remain active for a few days.
