GMC slaps Rs 1L fine on Ford following fire incidence at its service station

The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) served a notice on Ford service station to pay Rs 1 lakh as fine, within three days, after it was found guilty of not disposing of garbage properly and violating the environmental norms.
On Monday, a massive fire broke out in one of the service station's chemical dump, which prompted the corporation to impose the hefty fine with a caveat failure to pay up the fine amount within the specified time period would result in an additional fine of Rs 5,000 per day.

The fire was spotted by environment activist, Vikrant Sharma, who called the fire brigade. But, by the time the fire tenders reached the spot, the fire had already turned into an inferno.

The post-incident investigation found that the presence of plastic and other banned materials had escalated the fire.

Additional Commissioner of GMC, Pramod Kumar told said the corporation had earlier informed all the commercial establishments to make a provision for proper disposal of the generated garbage daily. “They were told not to dump their garbage in the open, yet, the direction was flouted which led to this eventuality. It added to the air pollution in the area,” Kumar added.
