Gautam Buddh Nagar police arrested a man on Friday on charge of online fraud. Operating under a fake facebook account in the name of an IPS officer, the accused, Ankit Tewari, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh, had sought help of people in raising fund of Rs 52,000 for a cancer patient. 

The matter was brought to light by one Surjeet, who registered an FIR against unidentified men for using his IPS friend’s name to dupe people online.

When the police initiated an investigation into the matter, it was found that the bank account used in duping the people belonged to Ankit Tewari. Soon a team of five policemen led by SHO Jitendra Dixit of Surajpur police station rushed to Pratapgarh and arrested the accused.

During interrogation, Ankit confessed to the crime and revealed the names of his two accomplices –  Ravi Singh and Shiva – involved in the crime.

As per the police, the accused has been using his education and knowledge of computers for committing online fraud.

The accused has been booked under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66 (computer-related offences) of the IT Act and will be presented in the court later on Friday while the police is on the lookout for his associates.
