Noida: World's biggest charkha inaugurated in Sector 94

Minister for Women and Child development Smirti Irani on Tuesday inaugurated the world's biggest charkha (spinning wheel) in Sector 94, Noida, to mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Local MP Mahesh Sharma and MLA Pankaj Singh were present on the occasion.

The charkha was made of recycled plastic waste on order by the Noida Industrial Development Authority. Chief Executive Officer of the Noida Authority, Ritu Maheshwari, had instructed its officials to use plastic waste specifically in its preparation.

The 14 feet tall, 20 feet long and eight feet wide charkha weighs 1650 Kg. Made from 1250 kg of plastic waste, it is located near Mahamaya flyover in Sector 94.

The authority is observing a 'Cleanliness is Service' month between September 27 to October 27. During this period, it will hold various civic drives in association with several organisations and resident bodies to make the city plastic free. Several people have volunteered to work for a clean city.
