Residents in a spot over dark underbelly of Dwarka

Desolate parks and vacant spots near societies become spots of bother for people living in Dwarka every night with darkness casting its shadow on the surroundings. These sites become a transit points for criminal trespass of antisocial elements. Theft and burglaries in the darkness of night are the logical outcome.

In July this year, an attempt was made to burgle New Arohi Apartments in Sector 12. The culprits were able to enter the society without being spotted through an adjoining park in the darkness of night.

In April, some incidents of burglary happened in Sector 5 when thieves entered the society through a dark area near its fence.

In January 2019, a sensational incident of burglary was reported from Metro View Apartments in Sector 13. The modus operandi employed by the thieves to sneak into the society was the same. They took the route of an desolate and vacant and area under the shadow of darkness.

There are many such examples which prove that the incidence of theft and burglary is possible due to darkness in the vacant plots, stretches, back lanes, parks etc. Miscreants use dark areas as a cover to sneak into a residential society during night.

General secretary of RWA of DDA SFS Flats, Sector 5, Mahesh Gupta, said, “This is really a serious matter. The dark areas are the reason behind the breach of security. I would like to suggest the local police to do regular patrolling late at night especially between 2 am and 5 am as maximum incidents happen during this period.”

People say the issue of unlit parks was raised during police-public meetings several times.  In a meeting at New Arohi Apartments, the subject came up during an interaction with local MLA, the BSES officials, DDA and MCD officials.

They lament there was no improvement in the condition of parks despite several representation they made to the authorities while the dark underbelly kept providing shelter to the miscreants.

Secretary of  New Arohi Apartments, SK Gupta, said, “A SDMC park adjacent to our boundary wall remains dark in night for a long time. Last night, a few miscreants entered our society from the park. Corporation and electrical department should take cognizance of the matter and illuminate the properly.”

Speaking on the on the subject, police officials said that they have sent details of the dark spots to the concerned agencies. The SDMC and DDA officials informed that the work on lighting up the parks was going on and the dark parks or green areas would lit up soon.
