To sensitise public on the hazards of plastic, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) will start a unique competition among its municipal councillors after Gandhi Jayanti. The councillors will go on a spree to collect to banned plastic products.

From October 2, 100 municipal councillors would compete against each other in collecting maximum number of banned plastic products from their respective wards. The competition would run throughout the month.

“The corporation will allocate Rs.10 lakh to the development fund of the councillor who wins this competition,” said Dinesh Chandra, GMC Commissioner.

"This is done to encourage the collection of plastic which would be used later in the construction of roads," Chandra added.

GMC officials said they took the move after getting inspired from PM Narendra Modi's call to ditch usage of single use plastic bags. There was a speculation that the central government would propose a blanket ban on single use plastic from October 2, after PM Modi's speech on Independence Day where he talked about avoiding using single use plastic. However, putting the speculation to rest, secretary of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, CK Mishra, clarified on Monday that the government does not intend to put blanket ban on single use plastic, instead, prefers a phase prediction in its usage. Mishra also added that the motive of the government is to launch a mass movement to sensitize public against the use of plastic.

In the last few months, the GMC has built two roads in Ghaziabad using plastic waste. While one is 100 meter long, the other is 280 meter long.
