To spread awareness on waste management, members of the Eco-Sustainability Action, an environment group of Fresco, a residential society in Sector 50, along with its RWA, held series of activities for the society’s children on Wednesday.

During the programme, members of the Eco-Sustainability Action taught the children on how to create utility items out of waste. Around 50 children participated in the activities and created planters and eco-bricks out of waste pet bottles. The kids painted glass bottles, food containers as planters and plastic packets to create useful household items.

A poster making competition was also organised where the children were supposed to convey messages on the need to save environment from the plastic using their drawing skills. Their posters will adorn the entrance of the society to instil in the residents a sense of responsibility to take up the cause of environment.

The children also made DIY herb garden where they planted wheat and coriander seeds in food containers before taking them homes. They were excited about the learning experience they had.

They were gifted with bamboo toothbrushes and were encouraged to use them instead of plastic ones.

Speaking on the occasion, Preeta Pradhan, one of the organisers, said, "Many people are interested in changing their unhealthy habits and educating others. All they need is a direction. However, naysayers are always there. But the way ladies of Fresco made banners and contributed to scripting and directing of the street play and involved in all other activities, it gives a lot of hope. "

A street play was also staged by the children to convey the message of harmful effects of plastic.

Meenakshi Kumar, a senior resident of the society, called it a wonderful experience to watch the Fresco children perform. She said, “Through the play, the children too got to know about the harmful effects of plastic on environment. It was lovely seeing the children so involved in various activities and using the waste to give vent to their creativity.”

Earlier, the society members launched a campaign to make the society plastic-free. They even distributed cloth bags among 800 households in the society. Nilesh Tandon, president of Fresco RWA, asserted, “We always support initiatives taken towards safeguarding the environment.”

“In our month-long campaign, every day two-three of our volunteers stand at the society’s gate and spend couple of hours in the morning and evening to exchange plastic with cloth bags. This way they share awareness about ecology with those who come to our society with plastic bags. All this is done to realise the goal of a plastic-free Fresco.”
