GreNo Authority finds discrepancies in implementation of SWM rule

In its two weeks of inspection conducted at residential, commercial and institutional buildings, the officials of Greater Noida Authority found discrepancies on the part of the maintenance agencies in implementing Solid Waste Mangement (SWM) rules.

The management agencies were found to be careless in implementing segregation of waste at source.

Officials requesting not to be named told CitySpidey that they found that the SWM rules were not implemented properly.

Many buildings, where more than 100 kg of waste are generated everyday, were found to be lacking in even the basic infrastructures to transport the waste to its storage location.

“At many places, we found that space has not been earmarked for storage of garbage. Waste were being dumped at basements of the buildings. Even, people were not aware about the process to decompose waste. However, the fear of fines has alerted them. Many of them have assured to follow the rules completely,” said a senior official in health department of Greater Noida Authority.

So far, four teams of officials have imposed fine against nearly 50 premises including residential societies, educational institutions and commercial buildings in Greater Noida. The officials said that the fines were levied on the basis of availability infrastructures and process being followed to manage their waste.

While at some places the fines were imposed between Rs 11,000 to Rs 21,000, many have been charged nearly Rs 1 lakh or above.

Another official who was part of the team said, “Not only the waste management system but STPs are not fully functional. Things are not appropriate on the ground and untreated water flowing in drains. People have to understand that waste management system and STPs are mandatory and each building has to comply with it.”
