After a long wait spanning decades, the residents will finally get a Mela Ground-cum-Sports Complex in Vasundhara area of Ghaziabad.

Uttar Pradesh Housing & Development Board has decided to develop this facility soon, officials told. The decision was taken in a board meeting of UPHDB which happened on Wednesday.

“The UPHDB, the developer of Vasundhara township, will build this facility on a land behind Indirapuram Police Station in Vasundhara Sector 7,” sources said.

For decades, this facility was due for the residents of the locality. “Now my children won't have to travel far to pursue their interest in sports. This facility, coming up near my home, would save a lot of our time and efforts,” commented Vikas Bhairav, a resident of the locality.

The decision was a follow up of a direction given by Allahabad High Court during proceedings of a writ filed by Vasundhara Vikas Samiti.

Vasundhara Vikas Samiti is an association of active residents of the area. The association challenge UPHBD in high court to develop facilities it promised to the residents during habitation of Vasundhara.

The association filed a writ petition in Allahabad High Court in 2016 to force the UPHBD to work, after which, the HC directed the UPAVP to build the facilities promised to the residents.

“There are several other facilities which UPHBD had promised to the residents but never provided, told KK Sharma,” joint secretary of the association.

“Facilities such as government hospital, degree college for girls, primary health centers, fire station, petrol pumps were promised but we are yet to receive it. They are even provisioned in the master plan of Vasundhara township,” Sharma added.

"Every time we speak to the officials, we were given reason of the dearth of the funds. This prompted us to approach the court," Sharma said.

Sources within UPHBD told that the authority will seek funds from the state government. “The authority has dearth of funds to deliver the facilities, we will seek help from the state,” the sources said.

However, the work of developing a fire station in Vasundhara has already started. A land in Sector 8 of Vasundhara has been allowed for the construction of fire station. “For the rest, UPHBD has assured us of delivery sooner,” added Sharma.

The association will hold a press conference on Thursday to divulge more details on the matter.

Spread across 1,000 acres, UPHBD had developed the Vasundhara township in 1990.
