Delhi is all set to become first Indian city where street vendors will be empowered through vending certificates which will allow them to operate from a fixed spot. Delhi government will be issuing certificates to the street vendors.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote on Twitter, “Without street vendors, no city can function. We just need to regularise them so that other citizens are not inconvenienced.”

He said that under the new arrangement, vendors will be able to make a honest living where there will be no harassment by the police and other authorities.

The licences would be issued before the end of this year.

Vendors operating at open spaces is a common sight all across the city. They sell everything from snacks and tea to toys and clothes. They normally operate on pavements of the roads.

This is the first time when such kind of arrangement has been done to protect the interest of vendors.
