RESIDENT SPEAK: Resident demands stringent action against those burning garbage

Today, while more and more people are concerned about environmental degradation and are actively participating in carrying out plantation drives in their areas mostly during monsoons or on special occasions in their families, others continue indulge in the activities prejudicial to the environment.

This phenomenon can be understood from practice of burning of garbage, waste, crop residue etc. Not that people are not aware about the adverse effects of the smoke released from the burning these objects. Why then they continue to do so?

Our neighbouring state of Delhi is trying its best to contain pollution level by carrying out odd-even scheme during winters, others are polluting the air by openly burning garbage.

It is painful to note that such things are done by the civic agencies whose job it is to ensure clean air for the citizens. In the absence of a provision for punitive action against those carrying out such activities, the public and the government agencies won't feel any liability.

A few days ago, an incident happened in our neighbourhood where two cattles strayed on to railway track while grazing on abundantly available green grass and bushes. They could have come been mowed down by a passing train if the people had not noticed and shooed them away in time. To ward off the cattle from the railway track, the railway employees found an easy way out. They set the entire stretch on fire to clear the area of the greenery. The flames emerging from the blaze were so high that they were visible from the terrace of our society.

We felt sorry for the method employed by the railway employees to resolve the issue. They have, no doubt, solved one problem, but created many more problems. Instead of spending money on labour to clear the greenery, they chose to pollute the environment putting health of several residents at stake.

The civic authorities and concerned officials of the pollution department should be more vigilant towards such kinds of incidents and take stringent action against the violators.
