The Nile, Gurgaon: Ruckus over power connection

Tired of the apathy of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam, the residents of The Nile on Sohna road, Sector 49, Gurgaon, took matters into their own hands and pooled in money for the laying of new high-tension power cables to ensure improved power supply.

For years, the department kept blaming the poor quality of power lines for electricity woes. Residents say the DHBVN was reluctant to change the cables, so they decided to do it on their own.

But adding insult to injury, the DHBVN is now asking them to cough up Rs 70 lakh for allowing power connections through the new cable. Dinesh Khare, the president of the apartments, said, “We were shocked when the DHBVN asked us to pay such a huge amount for ensuring we have proper power supply. Failing to get any relief from anywhere, the RWA has now taken its complaint to the chief minister’s grievance cell."

He further added, “We were facing a lot of trouble because of heavy load on the Sector 38 sub-station and the poor quality of power-supplying cables. Even after several complaints, the department was not ready to look into the matter. We got the work done from a government-approved contractor and had to spend Rs 30 lakh for it. But even then the department has problems.”

Elaborating on their struggle further, another resident said, “After the work was completed, we approached the DHBVN to give us the connection. The officials asked us to deposit Rs 70 lakh for a 2 KVA connection. That was completely unscrupulous.”

Residents claim they have paid the required amount to get the power supply, but the fight hasn't ended there. “The power needed to be shifted from one feeder to the other. So what is the point of charging us for a new connection?” Khare asked.

When City Spidey contacted DHBVN officials, they had a different story to tell. “It was a new connection from the feeder in Sector 46. We charged them for it, but deducted Rs 45 lakh from the total amount for the connection from the earlier feeder,” elaborated a senior official.
