Stubble burning renders air quality in Noida, GreNo unhealthy

The air quality in Greater Noida, which lies under  the red and violet band, on Monday, was found further deteriorated indicating that the waste and stubble burning in the region is continuing unabated in the absence of an initiative from the authorities to curb the practice.

On Monday, the air quality index (AQI) of Greater Noida at 4 pm was 162, which is considered 'unhealthy' while that at Sector 125 Noida was 230, 'very unhealthy' followed by 187 in sector 62, Noida.

As per the AQI coding, 151 to 200 comes under 'red', meaning unhealthy and 201 to 300 is 'violet', denoting very unhealthy.

Thick clouds of smoke emerging from burning flames of the waste could be seen near Gaur City 1 and Zeta 1 in Greater Noida and Sector 126 in Noida in the early hours of Monday morning.

Talking to CitySpidey, Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executive director research and advocacy in the Centre of Science and Environment (CSE) said, “In winters because of the drop in temperature, the pollution from the stubble burning gets trapped which causes far greater problem as compared to summers

She added, “Now the task of Noida and Greater Noida Authority is to map areas where garbage burning is taking place as it will have an equal effect on the environment. They should implement policies laid by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and National Green Tribunal (NGT) so that the air quality does not deteriorate further.
