Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday announced that students and senior citizens would soon get concession in Delhi Metro fares. He said that passengers under other categories too would avail similar concessions with a rider that they would be need-based.

At present, there is no provision for discount on fares to passengers travelling in Delhi Metro.

“We have prepared a technology-based solution to provide relief to passengers. The Central government will implement it appropriately, the Union housing and urban affairs minister said.

In June, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced free travel for women in Delhi Metro.

Talking of the feasibility of offering free-travel to women, the minister said that he was not against the plan stressing that this should also be need-based.

He continued, “Our new scheme will cover girl students and female senior citizens. We want to have proper technology in place to implement the new arrangement effectively.”

This will be the first time that Delhi Metro will be offering concessions. Passengers were burdened with steep fare hike in two-phases in 2017 after a gap of nine years.

Backing the decision of fare hike, Hardeep Singh Puri said, “The ridership in Delhi Metro has trebled since the fare hike. Earlier, it was 24-25 lakh but it is 60 lakh now and growing day-by-day.”
