GDA to impose fines against shopkeepers selling goods in encroached space

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) gears up to take action against vendors operating outside colonies and markets. Now, a fine will be imposed on these vendors for keeping their stuff outside the shop for display.

The fine to be imposed on the defaulters would start from Rs 500 and could go up to Rs 5,000 depending on the gravity of encroachment.

“The direction has been issued in the festival season keeping in view the traffic chaos caused by this encroachment by roadside shops,” a GDA officials said.

Secretary, GDA, Santosh Kumar Rai said that the authority had advised shopkeepers operating in the area of its jurisdiction to not encroach the roads by putting up kiosks and stalls on it to sell their goods.

GDA has also directed the shopkeepers to manage vehicle parking in their markets.

“They (the shopkeepers) are given responsibility to streamline the parking as well. If vehicles are found haphazardly parked, it will also be treated as the encroachment and its liability would also be borne by the shopkeeper,” added Rai.
GDA officials said that during festivals, shopkeepers extend their shops close to roads and footpaths. This encroachment leaves little space for parking and when customers park their vehicles on the roads to buy items, it creates traffic congestion.
