The Charkha (threading wheel) put on display near Mahamaya flyover in Sector 94, Noida, enters into Asia Book of Records as world's largest wheel. Made of 1250 kg plastic waste material, it is 14 feet high, 20 feet long and eight feet wide.
The charkha was made of recycled plastic waste procured through order by the Noida Industrial Development Authority. Chief Executive Officer of the Noida Authority, Ritu Maheshwari, had specifically instructed her officials to use only plastic waste in its preparation.
Maheshwari was awarded with a medal, a pen, a badge and a certificate of Asia Book of Records at the board room of the authority at an event held on October 22 for installation of the charkha.
Minister of Women and Child Development Smirti Irani, local MP Mahesh Sharma and MLA Pankaj Singh had inaugurated the mammoth charkha early this month to mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The charkha was prepared in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling for a ban on plastic during a speech. The charkha is part of the Noida Authority's drive to make the city free from plastic.
