Dwarka markets adapt to change in prefereneces of Diwali shoppers

Markets in Dwarka are ready with a wide variety of new things for this Diwali as the preferences and predilections of the customers have changed overtime. This year, dry fruits and laddoos are in great demand in place of other sweets.

For decoration of homes, readymade rangoli, bandar mala, designer candles and thalis are in demand.

Shopkeepers say that though the inflation and rising prices have an impact on sale of big items, small items are high in demand to salvage the situation.

Ram Kumar, a shopkeeper, said, “This year, readymade rangoli and colorful wooden and hard paper artificial flowers with coloured flower pots are in great demand. Since the cost of these items is not much many people are buying them. The price for such flowers is anywhere between Rs 20 and 1200 while that of the readymade rangolis is in the range of Rs 50-100.”

Sandeep Gulati, another shopkeeper, informed that the decorated thali, which is available in the market in the price range of Rs 250 to 1500, is also in demand.

The shopkeepers say that statue of Laxmi Ganesh made of white and pink marble, hanging diyas, floating candle, designer candles have arrived in the market as favourite choice for the shoppers. A candle seller, MK Singh, said, “Last year, gel candles and Chinese candles were in demand. But this year, people are demanding handmade Indian candles. Besides, traditional diyas are also in demand.”

Apart from these items,  a variety of jhumars (chandelier) and colourful lamps are also being sold in the markets on a price range of Rs 100-2000. Wooden heart-shaped baskets are available for Rs 150- 200. Women are buying these baskets for pooja and as gift items as well.

Among decoration items, this year, bandarmala and toran are in high demand. “It is a tradition of Rajasthani and Gujarati art, so in trend.  People like its handwork. This year, most of the work on jhumar, banadarmala and toran is done in thread and stone. The mala is studded with beads, pearls etc. with good work of jari. The price range of Bandar mala is from Rs 70 to 1000.”
