At Delhi metro, count on Uber for last mile connectivity

Good news for Delhiites! Commuters in the National Capital using Metro service no longer have to worry about reaching office in time in the morning or hassle free ride to home in the evening. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has roped in app-based cab aggregator Uber to improve the last-mile connectivity from its stations in Delhi.

With this, Metro users will soon be able to use Uber services from dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones at 210 stations. The DMRC has a total of 274 stations across the city.

Uber, which had won a competitive bid to expand its operations to the metro stations has a three-year contract with the DMRC. Delhi is the ninth city in the world and the first in Asia where Uber has launched it transit journey planning feature.

On Tuesday, the cab aggregator launched its ‘public transport’ feature, which will now appear as one of the options while booking a ride.

After opening the Uber App and entering a destination, riders in Delhi-NCR will see 'Public Transport' as an option alongside UberGo, Premier, and Pool. On selecting this feature, they will be able to see the fastest and cheapest routes, real-time schedules, departure times for Metro trains and buses, and walking directions to and from nearby Metro stations and bus stops.

Space will be provided by the DMRC to Uber to set up its facilities like pickup points, designated space and kiosks inside 210 metro stations. At present, such a facility is only available at three stations, Rajiv Chowk, Dwarka sector 21 and Sikanderpur.

Uber, along with the DMRC, is also working on developing model stations where there will be a facility for cabs, charging station for e-vehicles, with all components of multi-modal integration to provide seamless travel options to commuters.
