Seed bombing for a greener Aravalli

In a bid to increase Gurgaon's green lungs, Niswarth Kadam, an NGO, has planned to make the Aravallis a greener place. The NGO plans to shower seeds on the area with the help of a helicopter.

The NGO, founded by an NRI from the US, Pramod Raghav, has recently tasted success with campaigns such as "selfie with tree".

Niswarth Kadam plans to shower neem, peepal, banyan and sheesham seeds from a helicopter. The team hopes that if done before or during the monsoons, trees will grow, despite the rocky terrain.

"The forest department has extended its support to the project and is helping us make it a success," said Arvind Saini, the NGO's spokesperson. "The department officials will help us finalise the route. The area to be covered will include the Aravalli range in Gurgaon, Nuh, Rewari and Narnaul.”

In its first phase, a survey will be conducted by helicopter to identify the patches with the least number of trees. The second phase will involve seed bombing the identified areas. "Even if only 30 per cent of the seeds germinate, it is enough to make the Aravallis a lot greener," said founder Raghav.
