GDA does a shabby job of cleaning drains in Indirapuram

Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has cleaned out the drains in green belts but has left the waste in front of residential societies and on roadsides. During the rains, this waste, piled up on the roads, is being washed back into the drains at several locations.

Residents of Indirapuram have been complaining about choked drains and sewer lines for several years now. In response to a PIL filed by Alok Kumar, president of FedAOA, the Allahabad High Court had ordered GDA to look into Indirapuram's sewer and drainage problems. The residents had expressed concern about the monsoons, fearing that cleaning the drains would be difficult once it started raining. Following the court's orders, GDA recently started cleaning the storm drain from Aditya mall to NH 24 in the first phase of their plan.

The AOA of Mahagun Mansion Phase 1, with help from the GDA, had removed two garbage dumpsters from near the society. The area was then fenced off and developed as a green belt. Members of the AOA said that their efforts hardly made any difference, as the area is now filled with waste taken out from an adjacent drain.

City Spidey took up the matter with Chakresh Jain, superintendent engineer, GDA.

"It is not possible to transport the sludge and silt taken out from the drains because of its liquid nature," said Jain. "I came across the waste dumped in the green belt during a field visit. I will ensure that it is removed from the area soon."
