SDMC assures residents of a cleaner Dwarka

In a meeting held recently between a delegation from Dwarka Forum (DF) and Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), over sanitation and waste management in the city, the commissioner assured the forum of a clean Dwarka.

Forum members raised their concerns about solid waste management, public toilets and the overall sanitation situation in Dwarka.

Madhuri Varshney, president of Dwarka Forum and a resident of Ekta society in Sector 3, briefed the commissioner about the door-to-door campaign on garbage segregation and composting in societies. About the recent orders by SDMC for waste segregation at the source, she offered to support SDMC staff. AS Chhatwal, vice-president of the forum, brought up the poor sanitary conditions in Dwarka and requested for more such meetings.

Speaking about the decisions made by the commissioner, Varshney told City Spidey, “After a detailed discussion, many suggestions were approved, such as the distribution of two blue bins in every society by the corporation, the order for 200 green bins for the next round of distribution and 200 rotating bins for roads, markets and bus stands. It was also decided that a Whatsapp group would be formed for daily updates on sanitation. There will also be advertisements in newspapers to spread awareness of waste segregation.”

She added, “On the other hand, to support the system, it was decided that rickshaws with dual bins for segregated waste would be made available and can be obtained from the corporation on prior demand. It was also decided that the corporation will fund the pilot project for composting. To monitor and manage the system with the community's participation, a number of safai karamcharis, or cleaning staff, will be employed and a route map for garbage collection trucks will be provided to Dwaarka Forum at the earliest.”

The delegation from DF consisted of Varshney, Chhatwal, P Menon, treasurer, PB Mishra, joint secretary, and Swarna Latha, a member of DF. Garima Gupta, deputy commissioner (Najafgarh Zone), was also present at the meeting.
