How a WhatsApp group is keeping Dwarka clean...

A WhatsApp group created to promote cleanliness in Dwarka, is bringing about quite a change. The group was created as per instructions from Dr. Puneet Goel, the Commissioner of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). According to its members, within just three days since of its inception, more than 20 spots across Dwarka had been made garbage free.

At present, there are 25 members in the group. Commissioner Dr Puneet Goel; Deputy Commissioner, Najafgarh Zone, Garima Gupta and members of Dwarka Forum being the most prominent members.

Once a resident posts pictures along with the location of a garbage-strewn area, the officials take note of the problem and ensure prompt action.

According to the members, the group was formed after a decision was taken by the Commissioner during a meeting with the Dwarka Forum last week. President of Dwarka Forum and a resident of Ekta Society, Madhuri Varshney said, “This group has been formed to allow the officials to be aware of the ground reality. Commissioner is leading from the front, which has a huge impact in its success.”

Dwarka Forum (DF) members have been assigned different sectors to monitor and update the status of the garbage collection and cleaning of the area. The six DF members resopnsible for this are P Menon for Sector 6, PB Mishra for Sector 22, AS Chatwal for Sector 8, Swarna Latha for Sector 6, Geeta Upadhyay for Sector 4 and Madhuri Varshney for Sector 3.

"We take two rounds a day to monitor our respective areas and notify areas that need attention," said P Menon, treasurer of Dwarka Forum and member of managing committee of Sadbhavna Apartments, Sector 12. "The concerned officials have been quite prompt to get the areas cleaned. We also suggest ways to keep Dwarka clean."

On an average, 10-15 pictures are on the group every day. Prem Bihari Mishra, joint secretary of Dwarka Forum and a resident of Chitrakoot Apartments, Sector 22 said, “We are thankful to the Commissioner for forming this group and the enthusiasm he has shown for the cause. We will gradually add more people and make Dwarka a clean city.”
