Kapil Mishra, the Delhi water minister, visited water bodies in Sectors 23 and 20 in Dwarka on Saturday to take stock of their revival after the rains. He was accompanied by Bikram Singh, chief engineer of Delhi Jal Board, and other officials of DJB.

Members of Dwarka Water Body Committee like SS Mann, a resident of Sadbhavna Apartments in Sector 22, and Diwan Singh, a resident of Shaman Apartments in Sector 23, were also present.

During the visit, some tasks to be taken up immediately were assigned to officials of DJB and DDA. Digging at the water body in Sector 20 and creating non-return valve system on rainwater channels in water bodies of Sectors 23 and 20 were the main focus of the tasks. “Some other tasks like installing sluice gates in baffle walls on Trunk Drain-II in Sectors 20 and 23, planting trees around water bodies, installation of piezometers at both water bodies and operation of waste water treatment plant to supply water in lean season are to be done immediately to arrest rainwater as much as possible during monsoons for revival of water bodies. We are hoping that the two agencies, DDA and DJB, will work in tandem with each other,” said Diwan Singh.

He added, “We went to the water bodies with umbrellas. While approaching the water body in Bharat Vandana Prangan, Sector 20, we faced a bit of a problem due to muddy land. But, the minister was very enthusiastic to see the water body. We spent hours visiting sites, and had a useful session with him and the DJB officials with respect to the strategy and work for revival of water bodies.”

Diwan Singh further said that the minister was pleasantly surprised to see the amount of water in storm water drains, but was pained to see that going to waste. He asked the DJB team to immediately start the revival work and the DDA officials to provide support in the efforts.

According to some sources, the visit came as a result of the direction by the National Green Tribunal for the revival of water bodies in Dwarka. The NGT recently passed an order to the Delhi Government and agencies, like DDA and DJB, to revive water bodies of Dwarka before monsoons. In the order, NGT gave directives for revival of 33 water bodies in Dwarka.
