Thieves burgled the house of a former director-general of police in Unitech The World Spa West, part of a plush residential society spread across sectors 30 and 41, Gurgaon, and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh.

According to the local police, Kuldeep Dewan, the retired DGP, with his family, was out of town when the incident took place. When they returned, they found that their family help had gone missing and his mobile phone was unreachable. The family soon discovered that their gold and diamond jewellery was also missing, along with Rs 35,000 in cash.

The servant is the prime suspect in the case, which was reported in the Sector 40 police station.

Neena Dewan, wife of the former DGP, told City Spidey, “We suspect our servant Rama Shankar, alias Ramu, who has gone missing from the house.” Ramu hails from to Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, and was working with the family for the past seven years. “He was like a family member, which was why we gave him the responsibility of looking after the house when we were out of town for two days. He knew where the cash and the jewellery were kept,” she said.

The police is now looking at CCTV footage to ascertain the date and the time of Ramu's exit. They are also checking other society entry and exit details.

The incident has left the society residents in a state of shock. Unitech The World Spa East and Spa West are gated condominiums in sectors 41 and 30 respectively. The society is home to top managers from the corporate world, including CEOs of companies such as Nestle, Ranbaxy, Airtel, Reliance, Pepsico, Bacardi and Genpact. Managing directors of Mckinsey and Accenture, retired government officials, senior personnel from the armed forces, prominent doctors and bankers also stay here.
