East End Apts, MV I Ext: Residents can finally breathe easy

Residents of East End Apartments in Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Extension can finally heave a sigh of relief as the strengthening of the society's columns is likely to be completed by next week. The work had begun in February to ensure that the buildings were structurally sound to withstand earthquakes. Residents were wary, as the work had been left midway and columns stood chipped away to an extent where its steel bars were exposed.

SB Saraswat, vice-president of the society, said, “Of course, the residents' concern is valid. The society’s structural design is as per pre-2002 seismic standards and the column strengthening was imperative if mishaps were to be avoided. It was unfortunate that the work had to be discontinued. There were some internal issues, due to which works had to be stopped. But the issues were solved amicably among us and work restarted last week. It will be over by the end of this week.”

Ravi Kant, supervisor of the construction company hired by the managing committee to carry out the work, said, “We had completed 60 per cent of the work by March end. We had to leave midway as our dues were not paid.”

Upon visiting the society, City Spidey found that strengthening work had already been completed on 50 of the 70 columns.
