What’s that buzz in Dwarka parks?

Mosquitoes. They are everywhere. And dengue and chikungunya are spreading. So what are the authorities doing about it?

What’s that buzz in Dwarka parks?

Say you have been jogging in the neighbourhood park for a while and you feel the need to catch your breath on the park bench. If you are in Dwarka, sitting down on that park bench might not be a good idea. Within seconds, you might be swarmed by mosquitoes, and bitten by quite a few.

The problem is ubiquitous in the sub-city parks, whether maintained by DDA or by the municipal corporation.

“I used to go to the park for morning walks and yoga every day,” says Radhey Shyam, who is a regular at the park behind Radhika Apartments, Sector 14. “The place is teeming with mosquitoes. I’m down with chikungunya for the past three weeks now.”

Dwarka residents who frequent these parks blame the civic authorities for not taking steps to counter mosquito-breeding. “Despite cases of dengue and chikungunya piling up in the city, there has been no action from the DDA or the municipal corporation,” says MS Suri, vice-president of the New Millennium Apartments managing committee. “These parks need proper fogging. It’s also important to trim overgrown bushes and lawns regularly, as they attract mosquitoes.”

Cicily Kodiyan, president of Association of Neighbourhood Ladies Get-Together (ANHLGT) and a resident of Sheetal Vihar, Sector 23, says, “Both DDA and SDMC have failed to tackle the mosquito problem in the parks after monsoon. I appeal to the authorities to look into the matter on priority and fix the problem.”
