Noida, Prateek Laurel: Efforts on to inspire participation in AOA elections

The face-off between AOA members and the residents of Prateek Laurel, in Sector 120, Noida, may finally end this November. JP Singh, assistant registrar of co-operative societies, Gautam Budh Nagar -- vested with the power of conducting free-and-fair AOA elections in the society -- recently kickstarted the process of electoral roll revision.

The deputy registrar, Meerut, had dissolved the AOA after it received a complaint from a group of residents, who alleged that the AOA elections conducted in April 2016 violated the society's by-laws. The date of election needs to be declared in the AGM (annual general meeting) before the board completes its one-year tenure. But the outgoing AOA, which ended its tenure in March 2016, did not call the AGM and instead held fresh elections in April.

Singh, who has also been appointed as the election commissioner for the AOA elections, has intimated the residents’ body through a written letter that he will hold elections in the month of November -- in the first or second week. He also invited membership applications from flat owners to add new members to the electoral roll.

The letter states that the residents need to fill up the application form and submit it with a membership fee of Rs 1,000 and a poof of flat ownership to become an AOA member. The election commissioner added that he will accept forms only till October 25, after which no new application will be entertained.

According to the by-laws of the society, only enrolled members are entitled to vote. They may also contest elections.

The society, which houses 1530 flats, witnessed its first election in 2015. It has a total of 682 voters. But this number is expected to go north this election, as residents are being encouraged to take part in the electoral process, feels AOA President Sandeep Singh.

Efforts are on to create awareness about the upcoming elections, and ensure maximum participation.  Ved Prakash, a resident, said he has been sending mails to flat owners, requesting them to become members of the society. He confirmed that about 29 residents submitted applications in last few days.
