Sector 137, Noida: Residents raise collective voice against garbage disposal

Residents of several societies in Sector 137, Noida, have now joined hands to fight against the dumping  of garbage in the landfill site in Sector 138 by Noida Authority. The societies include Supertech Ecociti, Purvanchal Royal Park, Exotica Fresco, Paramount Floraville, Ajnara Daffodil, Gulshan Vivante, Paras Tierea and Blossom County.

The 20-ft-deep site lies in close proximity to the Sector 137 societies, causing residents to react. Earlier too, each society had individually raised its voice against the dumping of garbage in Sector 138. But now they have decided to act collectively for greater impact.

On October 16, a signature campaign was launched, and residents from all the societies signed on a petition to Noida Authority.

Ankur Arora, a resident, said, "This collective protest will help us mount pressure on the Authority. This will force the civic body to realise that a large numbers of residents are getting affected due to garbage disposal in Sector 138."

Another resident, Vishnu Saini, added, "The foul smell emanating from the site has turned life hellish for residents. We are forced to keep our windows shut at all times. This is going to adversely affect our health. Chances of groundwater contamination due to garbage dumping cannot be ruled out either."

Surprisingly, BK Singh, the project engineer of Noida Authority and also the officer under whose jurisdiction the landfill site is, told City Spidey that he had no inkling of the situation. He added that he had come to know of the problem only after City Spidey confronted him.

Singh promised to take action. "If this site is causing such grave problems for residents, dumping of garbage will be stopped immediately," he said. In fact, he went on to say that he would try to sort out the problem within a day's time. He promised to level this particular site with only construction waste and soil.

Noida Authority does not have a designated dumpyard in the city, and Singh said it was the responsibility of the public health department to find a solution to this.
